How do you regain your health in a polluted world? In a world of such stress, such toxicity, and such global angst? The quality of our food has been co-opted by huge agricultural conglomerates. Our industrialized food is now processed, produced by chemical, not food, companies. We eat engineered food without our awareness because we have no GMO labeling. We consume high calories and low nutrition. We are using more pesticides and herbicides than any time in history. We are poisoning our animals, our soil, our water, our air, our planet, and ourselves. Climate change is real – with worse consequences than we imagine. Our oceans are more acidic than any time in the past 20 million years. I could go on and on with horrific facts, but you get the picture.
What’s the saddest part of this description? We, human beings, are responsible for violation of our planet. We have the highest biomass of any species, yet we touch the earth less frequently than any other species. We don’t connect with the earth; we just destroy it. The same is true for our relationship with ourselves. We don’t connect with each other; we just seem bent on destroying each other. What has happened to personal compassion? What has happened to that spirit of giving and helping others? Frankly, we are just too busy. Too many of us are rushing through life – alive but not really living. Physically active, but not physically (or emotionally) healthy. Worse, we don’t see our own future. Does anyone out there – yes, you – have any doubt that we will conquer the universe? Frankly, we are going to need some major changes just to survive as a species.
For some people, they think they are protected by their wealth. Wrong. We may be the wealthiest country and we may have the most billionaires, but we also lead the world in homelessness per capita. We have our 1% and our 99%. Our 99% suffer significantly, but those 1% aren’t so secure either. Look at how hard they fight to avoid taxes. When you fight that hard – moving to different states, moving to different countries – you have to be operating from fear. Like whatever you have is not enough? Well, they are right. All the money in the world is not enough for health and happiness. That money is not going to keep you alive. It is not even enough to help you regain your health. In fact, if you just focus on money and your own personal success, it is probably going to lead to your demise.
Fortunately, there is a solution. That brings us back to our original question: how do we regain our health? From my perspective, it starts with our eating style. Toxic food leads to toxic emotions. Toxic emotions lead to a toxic world. Garbage in, garbage out. We all remember that statement. But there is truth in the concept. If we want to reverse course and regain our physical and emotional health – for ourselves and our planet – we need to stop eating, drinking, and breathing so much toxicity. With each breath, we can only block out so much. But for our eating and drinking? For those activities, we can take control. It may require that you become a bit of rebel. However, for baby boomers, is that such a new mantel?
What rebellious actions do you need to take? For starters, stop supporting big corporations like MacDonald’s, Coco-Cola, and Monsanto. MacDonald’s and Coco-Cola have addicted our population to sugar, leading to multiple diseases. Monsanto has poisoned us with its genetic engineering and excessive use of pesticides. 90% of our genetically engineered foods are sprayed with massive doses on Roundup Ready, a pesticide like Agent Orange. Do you know that our government now allows 5,000 times more pesticide than they used to allow? We are eating weed killers every time we ingest one of their products. And the weed killer, soaked into our food, is destroying our GI track, our immune system, and our health. Many of our food sensitivities, including gluten, may be related to these weed killers. Some of our physical and emotional illnesses may also be related. Who knows? These companies repeatedly block independent scientific studies.
Another point. Let’s forget, for a moment, the debate on animal products versus plant products. How about following this recommendation for eating? If you are going to purchase beef or chicken, make certain that it does not come from feedlots or factory farms. The level of cruelty for those animals would not be tolerated for any pet. If you could see how the cattle or the hens or the hogs are treated, you would consider it a crime. The toxins in the food for these animals are am equal crime. You do not have to become a vegetarian; you just need to better select your food. You want clean, not contaminated food. You want food that is not genetically engineered. With these new food choices, you will be starting to improve your health – and you will be starting to improve the health of the world (by moving the world away from its growing dependence on profit driven chemical / food companies).
Is there an underlying theme? To regain your health in a polluted world, you need to make smart choices. You need to eat food (and drink clean water) that is as close as possible to the earth. A backyard garden would be ideal. A good relationship with a local farmer would be wonderful. For both plants and meat. Better knowledge of the source of your water would also be important. Unfortunately, we are beyond the point where we can put anything into our mouths. We need to re-establish our connection to the planet. Picking the right items to eat is a great start. Progressing from a changed eating style to a changed life would be beneficial. It’s time to become more educated and more selective with what we consume. With high quality foods, we can regain our health; and with regained health, we can have sufficient vitality to change our lives – and the course of the world. Even if it one bite at a time. Please … give your new eating style a chance.
