For your best health, do you really know what to eat? More importantly, do you understand why you should be making certain changes to your eating style? For most people (the great majority of people), they do not know the answers to those two basic questions. Especially at the time of retirement. Or just when they grow older. It’s not their fault. There is too much misinformation. But can we all agree that our lives are not working right now? That our life styles are not working? That our eating styles are not working? Can we agree, as a starting point, that something must change?
Let me try to make this simple. Individually, we are off target. As a society, we are equally off target. Our major medical (and psychiatric) illnesses are growing more, not less, prevalent. The world’s instability is getting worse, not better. What is the core problem? Think how much we have become disconnected from our planet, from the earth. Let me guess. You spend 90% of your time indoors. Probably confined to some vertical coffin. For many of you, you rarely touch the earth. Standing on concrete doesn’t count. In fact, if you are wearing shoes with insolated soles, that does not count. In reality, as we have rushed through our careers, we have become too disconnected from what we need.
Modern living? The commercials make it sound great. All those conveniences from fast foods to high technology. But something is missing. When the researches find the remains of humans from the past, they do not find tooth decay, bone decay, arthritis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. When researchers study the people from the past, they do not find anything close to our current global levels of depression and high suicide rates. Why do we need to make changes in our eating style? There’s one simple answer. What we are eating is not keeping us healthy. In fact, it is killing us – physically, emotionally, intellectuality, and spiritually.
For the future, how to artists tend to portray humans? Big heads? Large eyes? Pale skin? A tiny mouth. Skinny body. Long fingers? And where are we sitting in those images? In some space ship? Eating synthetic food? If you have any doubts, just think of today’s society. How thinness is emphasized. How beauty seems so synthetic. More importantly, how beauty beats character. Is that what we want for the human race? Is that what we want for ourselves? From my perspective, we can do more than change our collective future. We can dramatically change the rest of our lives, moving each of us back to a better target.
Before I discuss what we should eat (and I have already been addressing that issue in my book, The Boomer Survivor Kit, and in my prior blogs), let me ask you to remember one fundamental point. Forget the word natural. In today’s grocery store, that word means nothing. You can buy a product, labeled natural, and there is not anything in it that is natural. What can you do? You can push past anything that says natural. What do you need to eat? Explained as simply as possible? You need to eat foods that are as close to the earth as possible. Foods that are not contaminated. Foods that are not processed. Foods that are not genetically engineered. Foods that are real. That may sound easy; it is not. But you can do it. You must do it.
Why is that so important? Because of the new field of epigenetics. We are not locked into our genes or our current state of health. Just because an illness runs in your family does not mean that you will get the illness. Just because you have some current condition does not mean that you will have that illness until you die. Just because you take some pill today does not mean that you will be taking that pill forever. Each one of us has an internal program, previously unknown, that allows for those changes. It is called the epigenome; and it functions like a switch. It turns on genes to fight against illnesses; and it can turn off genes that contribute to the development of those illnesses. What is one of the major influences for your epigenome? It’s the food that you eat.
So, what’s the solution? I’ll be honest. For the urban dweller (which is the majority of our population), the challenge is much harder. You want to consume clean food without a long transportation train ride or a long shelf life. That means finding markets that support the local farmer, not the giant agricultural / chemical firm. That means searching for vegetables / fruits / nuts / seeds that are locally grown without any pesticides and herbicides. If you like meat, that means finding cattle that is locally grown and grass fed, preferably in small herds. If you like fish, that means finding fish that has not been caught in regions contaminated by toxins. Or fish that has been genetically engineered. To clarify these issues, it takes effort. It takes some searching.
That is my purpose: to help you clarify what you should be eating. Actually, that is only part of my purpose. My goal is to get you eating right, exercising right, and living right. Good health – physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. Obviously, all of those components don’t depend just on what you are eating. Only an idiot would make that claim. However, your eating style impacts all of those features more than most of you realize. Your mother was right when she coached you to eat the right foods. Back then it was easy. Most of the foods were truly natural. Today, it is far more complex. So, do not expect a solution in one blog. It may take us some time. But I believe in you – and you power to heal yourself, change the direction of your life, and reach a brighter future. You just need some assistance.
So, come on. Read. Learn. Change. Heal. Grow. (Just be patient.)
