Do you believe in self-healing? Miracles? I have seen both in my patients. I had one patient who had an inoperable brain tumor, diagnosed by three different facilities, USC, UCLA, and Stanford. Each group of specialists gave her 6 months to live. After 12 months, she returned to each of the doctors and received the same report: her tumor was remarkably gone. Disappeared. The doctors claimed it was a miracle; she asserted it was self-healing. If I were to cast a vote, I would support the patient and her view of the healing process.
Before I explain what she did (and there were several factors), let me highlight once again the field of epigenetics. With egigenetics, there is a growing scientific proof that there is a subset of 500+ genes that turn on and off, depending on internal signals, to either fight disease or promote disease. Two primary areas of influence come from your daily eating style and your regular cognitive style. For this patient, she dramatically altered her diet and she devoted daily time to meditation with visualization of the tumor shrinking. She also added a spiritual component, reaching God through her periods of meditation.
Now, I am not arguing that the same formula would work for you. However, I think it is a formula worth evaluating and possibly adapting to suit your own tastes and your beliefs. Let me start with your eating style. We know 70% of Americans have food intolerances. Those food intolerances create inflammation; inflammation leads to disease; and inflammation activates certain genes to further promote illness. So, our first step toward self-healing involves changing our eating style to reduce inflammation and switch those genes toward healing, repairing illnesses.
You already know my own views. A plant-slanted eating style reduces inflammation and promotes healing. You also know my belief of a group of foods, which send signals to a subset of genes for healing. In The Boomer Survivor Kit, I voted for GOMBBS – greens (vegetables and lettuce), onions, mushrooms, berries, beans, and nuts. In my previous blogs, I highlighted a group of super foods, which seem to expand that same program for healing. Those foods included goji berries, hemp seeds, quinoa, reisha mushrooms, and shaga. There’s one doctor, Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, who lists the top 5 foods for healing: apples, artichokes, avocadoes, beets, and blueberries.
I am not a nutritional expert. I do not have the expertise to express an opinion that is more valid that the above suggestions. But I hope you can see the trend. These top physicians and nutritional experts are encouraging a group of foods – for healing – that offer high-density nutrition with concentrated antioxidants. These are all foods that do not include meat and dairy products, that do not offer high sugar/ salt / carbohydrates / contaminants / GMOs, that are still close to the earth, not yet damaged by our agricultural giants and their processed food delivery line. So, that is the first part of the formula for self-healing. Steer clear of what you are currently eating (because it must have played a role in your illness); and switch to a group of foods that fall outside your current intake style. I support plant-based eating with a mix of all of the above super / healing foods. My patient, by the way, adopted a macrobiotic diet for her cancer, but I believe it was the change that counted the most, not just the specific diet.
The change in the eating style is only one part of the prescription. The second part is meditation and visualization. Humans have 45,000-60,000 thoughts per day with most of these thoughts related to worry. With 92% of worry useless, that leads to the wrong physiology – not a physiology that is congruent with healing. A practice of daily meditation (and I know it is not easy to develop this habit) can create a clearer mind, which would allow for visualization of how you want your health to improve. Remember my discussing how to focus your thoughts and dialogue, as you redesign your life, on what you want, not on what you do not want. Well, the same is true for your health. You need to visualize good results, not the negative alternatives.
Some people laugh at the idea, believing that visualization cannot work. Ask any athlete who has reached the peak of their careers. Ask the artist who transforms the vision into reality. Ask any physician who has observed patients achieve remarkable results with visualization practices. If you discount meditation and visualization, at least acknowledge how meditation lowers the blood pressure and pulse, how meditation lowers the cortisol level, and how meditation transforms a toxic internal state into a healthy, positive state, which is far more inclined to promote healing and repair. Even the most skeptic person has to admit the benefits of a changed internal climate.
The last component is spirituality. My recent teleseminar presentation (click here) focused on the values of spirituality. But spirituality also has an important role in healing and repair. Again, for those skeptics, just research the studies on prayer and how it seems to extend life. For me, I am not advocating a singular focus on prayer. Instead, for self-healing, I am advocating more of a connection to God. That can come through religion, but it can also come through spirituality; and spirituality can come through multiple activities from yoga to long walks in nature to periods of personal silence, contemplation, and gratitude.
In closing, I hope you can accept the basic points. For healing, you need to stop your current behaviors and your current path and dramatically make some fundamental changes. I believe those changes involve a switch in your daily eating style, a switch in your cognitive style, and a switch in your connection to God (and your connection to people). All of these factors, including even friendship, significantly enhance your environment for healing. At the same time, if you do not yet have a major illness or a current medical crisis, may I encourage you to redesign yourself, your relationships, and your life to prevent these illnesses / crises. As stated, you have far more control in your health and your future than you can possible imagine. My suggestion is to utilize that power. Change your life. Heal now.
